Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Grease an 8-inch square baking pan.
Combine the cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in medium bowl. Combine well the milk, oil, and egg in measuring cup used to measure the milk. Add milk mixture to flour mixture and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
Pour batter into the prepared pan.
Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes but check at 18 minute mark. Bake until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. In our present oven (Jessen), cornbread usually takes an extra 5 minutes to be done (total 30 minutes).

To make into muffins, spoon batter into 10-12 greased or paper-lined muffin cups filling 2/3 full. Bake in preheated 400 degree F oven for 15 minutes.
